Muscat: A premium mobile phone number fetched a whopping 429,500 Omani riyals (Dh4.09 million) at an auction organized by telecommunications provider Vodafone on Wednesday, making it the most expensive number ever sold in the country.
Vodafone has announced that the entire auction proceeds would be donated to charity. The auction included both ‘diamond’ and ‘gold’ numbers, and a total of six unique numbers were sold. The company congratulated the buyer of the ultra-rare 7777 7777 number, emphasizing its exclusivity.
The record-breaking sale has sparked online debate. One, Ahmed Al Balushi commented on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “I could clear all my loans, buy a house, and live a luxurious life with that amount of money.”
While another user questioned the rationale behind spending so much on a phone number, remarking that only those with excess wealth could afford such purchases. Whereas another user, Mohamad Al Ansari, defended the buyer’s decision, stating, “It’s his money, and he can spend it as he wishes.” DeshGujarat
