183 highway hotels raided, fined across Gujarat for violating legal metrology laws
February 28, 2025
Gandhinagar: As part of a collective campaign, the Office of the Controller of Legal Metrology and Consumer Affairs conducted surprise inspections at hotels along various highways across the state today, taking legal action against violations. During the operation, Deputy Controllers, Assistant Controllers, and inspectors from the department took action against a total of 183 highway hotels for violating the provisions of legal metrology laws and imposed fines amounting to approximately ₹4,63,000/-. Further proceedings are currently underway.
During these inspections, several irregularities were found, including charging above the MRP for packaged goods and cold drinks, providing less than the specified quantity, failing to maintain proper weighing scales, not displaying food quantities on menu cards, and using unverified or unstamped electronic weighing scales.
Travelers often purchase food and other items in a hurry at highway hotels, making them vulnerable to being overcharged or shortchanged in weight/measurement. To prevent such incidents, raise consumer awareness, and ensure compliance with legal provisions, the Legal Metrology Department launched this statewide campaign to enforce regulations at highway hotels across the state.
