Surat: A sub-inspector who was caught on camera beating up a 17-year-old boy, who mistakenly rode his bicycle into a street where a rehearsal for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy was taking place, has faced disciplinary action.
A viral video of the incident, which occurred at Ratan Chowk on Thursday, shows the teenager cycling as the Prime Minister’s convoy passes. Later, sub-inspector B S Gadhvi confronts him, pulling his hair and slapping him.
As the video sparked outrage locally and on social media, Surat police traffic department Deputy Commissioner Anita Vanani stated that the officer’s duty had been reassigned from the Prime Minister’s security detail to the Surat police control room.
Later, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Branch, Hetal Patel, issued a press note stating, “This kind of behavior is unacceptable, and we have requested the Superintendent of Police in Morbi to withhold the PSI’s salary increment for a year.”
The boy’s family grew concerned when he did not return for hours. “We thought he had gone for a walk, but when he came home crying at 9:30 pm, he said he was beaten by the police without knowing why. Instead of assaulting him, the cops should have counseled him,” a relative said.
Meanwhile, Limbayat police identified the boy on Friday and brought him to the station to record his statement. According to police sources, he had recently arrived in Surat from Nepal and was staying with a relative. DeshGujarat
