Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Government today announced that Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel has upgraded 69 municipalities in the state with the aim of making the state’s cities more dynamic, vibrant, and livable through sustainable urban development.

As part of this municipal upgradation, 21 municipalities have been added to the A-class category (population over 1 lakh), 22 to the B-class category (population between 50,000 and 1 lakh), and 26 to the C-class category (population between 25,000 and 50,000).

Municipalities that serve as district headquarters, such as Khambhaliya, Lunawada, Modasa, Vyara, Chhota Udepur, Dahod, and Rajpipla, have been upgraded to A-class. Religious and tourist hubs like Dwarka, Palitana, Chotila, and Dakor, known for high visitor and pilgrim traffic, have also been included in this upgradation.

Given Vadnagar’s 2,500-year-old mythological and historical significance, as well as its national and international cultural heritage, it has also been elevated to A-class status.

With this upgradation, each A-category municipality will receive approximately ₹28 crore, B-category municipalities ₹22 crore, C-category municipalities ₹15.5 crore, and D-category municipalities ₹10 crore under the Swarnim Jayanti Chief Minister Urban Development Scheme. These funds will be used for infrastructural development, outgrowth area expansion, identity-enhancing projects, and Nagar Seva Sadan works.
