Gujarat govt OKays Rs. 1003 crore for Phase-2 of Kharicut Canal Redevelopment

Ahmedabad: Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel today approved works worth approximately ₹1,003 crore for Phase-2 of the Kharicut Canal Redevelopment project being carried out by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC).

Under Phase-2, in Stretch-1, from S.P. Ring Road to Naroda Crematorium; in Stretch-2, from Vinjol Wehala to Ghodasar (Aavkar Hall); in Stretch-3, from Ghodasar (Aavkar Hall) to Vatva Gam; and in Stretches 4 and 5, from Vatva Gam to S.P. Ring Road, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will undertake the redevelopment of the existing canal.

The project includes the construction of an RCC stormwater box structure, roads, footpaths, retaining walls, a water supply pipeline, irrigation structures, stormwater extensions, and a sewer system.

The Kharikat Canal, constructed by the Irrigation Department, runs through the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation area. After the completion of Phase-1, the remaining open sections from S.P. Ring Road via Muthiya village to Naroda Crematorium and from Vinjol Wehala via Ghodasar (Aavkar Hall) to Vatva to S.P. Ring Road will be redeveloped under Phase-2.

Due to urban development along both sides of the canal, increasing city expansion, and the disposal of solid waste into the canal, water pollution has become a significant concern, posing a risk to public health. Additionally, connectivity issues have emerged in the TP (Town Planning) areas on both sides of the canal. To address these challenges, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has entrusted the redevelopment work to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation for its swift and effective execution.

The Amadavad Municipal Corporation has completed 80 percent of the canal development work in Phase 1, covering a total length of 12.75 kilometers from Naroda Crematorium to Vinjol Wehala. Out of the ₹1,338 crore allocated for Phase-1, more than ₹700 crore has been spent so far.

Now, the Chief Minister has approved Phase 2 for the redevelopment of the remaining sections of the Kharikat Canal. The entire funding for Phase 2 has been sanctioned under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Urban Development Scheme. DeshGujarat
