Supreme Court Recommends 8 Lower Court Judges for Gujarat High Court Elevation

Gandhinagar: The Supreme Court of India has recommended the elevation of eight judges from Gujarat’s lower judiciary to the Gujarat High Court, paving the way for a significant increase in the court’s strength. The central government is expected to issue a formal approval following the Supreme Court’s recommendation.

The Supreme Court collegium, in its meeting approved the proposal to elevate these eight persons, whose names will now be forwarded to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice for official clearance.

Names Recommended for Elevation:

  • Liyakat Hussain Shamsuddin Pirzada
  • Ramchandra Thakurdass Vachhani
  • Jayesh Lakhanshibhai Odedra
  • Pranav Maheshbhai Raval
  • Moolchand Tyagi
  • Dipak Mansukhlal Vyas
  • Utkarsh Thakorbhai Desai
  • Rohankumar Kundanlal Chudawala

These judicial officers are currently serving in various trial courts across Gujarat. Notably, Moolchand Tyagi previously held the position of Registrar General at the High Court and was recently transferred as Principal District Judge in Anand.

Currently, the Gujarat High Court has 32 judges. With the approval of these eight names, the total strength of the High Court will reach 40.

After receiving formal approval from the Ministry of Law and Justice, the President of India will issue a formal notification with the warrants of appointment. Subsequently, a swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Gujarat High Court for the newly appointed judges.

This move is expected to expedite the dispensation of justice in the state by addressing the backlog of cases and strengthening the judicial infrastructure.
