Surat: A local court has registered a criminal case against four policemen following a suo motu inquiry into their alleged torture of three robbery suspects. The officers are accused of injecting petrol and chilli powder into the detainees’ private parts and physically assaulting them.
The 5th Additional Judicial Magistrate, First Class, Shraddha N. Falki, issued the order on March 26 after reviewing statements from the three accused and a doctor, along with medical records and other documents. The court found prima facie evidence that the policemen committed offenses under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita sections related to voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.
The suspects—Saurabh Sharma (19), Rakesh Vagh (22), and Subodh Ramani (23)—alleged they were beaten with belts on their hands and legs and struck with a cloth-wrapped stick on their backs at Sachin police station in Surat. The accused officers, identified as constables Vanar, Jaypal Sinh, and Narayan Sinh, along with police van driver Shaitansinh, also allegedly threatened to file a GUJCTOC (Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Crime Act, 2015) case if they complained in court.
