Over 57% water in reservoirs, sufficient supply available for summer: Gujarat govt

Gandhinagar: As a result of widespread and sufficient rainfall during this year’s monsoon, 207 reservoirs in the state — including the Sardar Sarovar — currently hold more than 57 percent of their total water storage capacity. Water from these reservoirs will be made available to citizens during the summer season. On April 7 last year, water storage in these 207 reservoirs stood at 50.84 percent. The reservoirs now have sufficient water to meet the state’s summer needs, Water Resources Minister Kunwarji Bavlia said today.

Providing further details on the current status of the reservoirs, the Minister mentioned that the Sardar Sarovar Project — considered the lifeline of Gujarat — currently holds 61.95 percent of its total storage capacity. Additionally, more than 62 percent water storage is available in 13 reservoirs in South Gujarat, 56.21 percent in 17 reservoirs in Central Gujarat, 44.44 percent in 141 reservoirs in Saurashtra, over 41 percent in 20 reservoirs in Kutch, and 34.95 percent in 15 reservoirs in North Gujarat.

Minister of State for Water Resources Mukeshbhai Patel noted that the Machhu-3 reservoir in Morbi is currently more than 100 percent full. Furthermore, 21 reservoirs have water levels between 70 and 100 percent, 44 reservoirs between 50 and 70 percent, and 74 reservoirs between 25 and 50 percent. Only 67 reservoirs have more than 25 percent water storage available. Additionally, the Sardar Sarovar Dam is currently receiving 2,505 cusecs of water, Wanakbori Dam 3,700 cusecs, and Kadana Dam 1,742 cusecs. The Minister assured that adequate water will be supplied to both rural and urban citizens across the state during the summer, as required.

Minister Kunwarjibhai also stated that the state government has launched several water conservation initiatives, such as the Sujalam Suflam Jal Sanchay Abhiyan and Nal Se Jal Abhiyan, making Gujarat self-sufficient in water management. In response to the call for ‘Catch the Rain’ by Prime Minister Narendrabhai Modi, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched Catch the Rain – Sujalam Suflam Jal Abhiyan 2.0 from Mehsana. This water conservation campaign will run across the state from April 4 to May 31, 2025. DeshGujarat
