Surat sees slight dip in car and EV sales, growth in two-wheeler sales in 2024–25
April 28, 2025
Surat: Car sales in Surat have witnessed a slight decline in the 2024–25 period, with 19,627 cars sold, compared to 20,823 in 2023–24. The dip is attributed to rising inflation and the middle class prioritizing savings. Along with this, the sales of battery-operated electric vehicles (EVs) also saw a significant fall. From 16,926 EVs sold in 2023–24, the number dropped to 12,748 in the following year. Sales of electric three-wheelers decreased from 421 to 349, while electric four-wheeler sales declined from 1,333 to 1,198.
In contrast, the sales of CNG-fitted vehicles surged, with CNG-fitted autorickshaws increasing from 6,556 to 8,567 and CNG-fitted four-wheelers rising from 6,045 to 7,594. Additionally, sales of CNG-fitted goods vehicles climbed from 734 to 1,123.
The Surat RTO reported earnings of over ₹400 crore, while the Surat Municipal Corporation collected ₹153.33 crore in road tax, reflecting a 6% increase from ₹145.37 crore in the previous year.
Meanwhile, sales of two-wheelers showed growth, with mopeds and scooters rising from 57,655 to 72,626 and motorcycles from 58,972 to 63,073. However, sales of loading trucks and tractors saw a decline, from 2,170 to 1,863, while tempo sales rose from 727 to 1,334. Ambulance registrations increased slightly, from 16 to 17, while sales of sweeping machines dropped from 21 to 19.
In total, 1,91,920 vehicles were sold in Surat in 2024–25, including 1,48,460 two-wheelers and 19,627 cars. This compares to 1,33,553 two-wheelers and 20,823 cars sold in 2023–24. The decline in EV sales was also attributed to the Gujarat government’s delay in offering a 5% relief on road tax for electric vehicle buyers. DeshGujarat
