Vadodara: Private schools in the city have been barred from compelling parents to purchase school uniforms, shoes, notebooks, books, or other stationery items directly from the school or associated vendors. The District Education Officer (DEO) issued an urgent circular on Monday, warning that strict penal action—including fines ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 and possible cancellation of school recognition—will be taken against institutions found violating the directive.

The move comes amid ongoing school admissions and ahead of the 35-day summer vacation, which begins on May 5. Schools are scheduled to reopen for the new academic session on June 9. During this period, many parents begin preparations for the upcoming school year, making them vulnerable to arbitrary demands by some private schools.

The DEO’s circular has been issued in response to widespread complaints that certain schools were selling uniforms, books, and other supplies within school premises, violating education department guidelines.
