Ahmedabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) carried out searches at 11 locations in Gujarat and Rajasthan on Thursday in connection with a corruption case involving Santosh Karnani, a 2005-batch IRS officer.
According to a news agency, the searches were conducted at properties linked to Karnani, his associates, and family members in Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur.
Karnani, who was then serving as the Additional Commissioner of Income Tax (Central) Range-1, Ahmedabad, was booked in 2022 by the Gujarat Anti-Corruption Bureau for allegedly demanding a bribe of ₹30 lakh from a local builder. The case was later transferred to the CBI, which filed its chargesheet in 2023.
Subsequently, the CBI booked Karnani, his wife, and other individuals in another case under the Prevention of Corruption Act, accusing them of amassing assets disproportionate to their known sources of income. He was also accused of sharing confidential information with a builder to help win a case at the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), in exchange for acquiring land at a significantly reduced price.
