Ridership (traffic) study for Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor soon; NHSRCL invites bids
May 12, 2025
New Delhi: The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has invited online tenders for conducting a detailed ridership (traffic) study for the upcoming Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor. The study aims to assess passenger demand and travel behavior along the 508-km under-construction corridor, which will connect key cities including Mumbai, Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad.
The study’s primary objective is to assess the existing traffic characteristics of the study area and estimate travel demand along the under-construction MAHSR corridor. The travel demand assessment will include:
-
• Optimal fare structure where overall revenue is maximized
-
• Ridership assessment for the above fare level
-
• Projected annual revenue
-
• Station loads with peak-hour footfalls (both boarding and alighting)
-
• Section loads with Peak Hour Peak Direction Traffic (PHPDT)
-
• Origin–Destination matrix between stations
-
• Modal split of passengers arriving at/departing from HSR stations (i.e., mode chosen by passengers to access the HSR station)
-
• Customer segmentation based on passenger profiles (by age, income, occupation, and trip purpose)
-
• Access and egress data (mode split, distance, time, and cost)
The study will consider the base year 2030 and evaluate projections for up to 30 years, including the 2028 Sabarmati–Vapi section.
As part of the scope of work, the selected consultant will conduct primary surveys (such as Origin–Destination interviews, Willingness-to-Pay surveys at bus/rail/air terminals, and volume counts), analyze secondary data from toll plazas, bus operators, and vehicle registration databases, and apply advanced travel demand modeling. The contractor is expected to complete the study within 20 weeks from the issuance of the Letter of Acceptance.
The deadline for online bid submission is June 2, 2025, with technical bids opening on June 3. DeshGujarat
