Veterinarian Attacked by Lioness During Treatment, Prioritizes Animal’s Care Over Own Injuries

Gandhinagar: A dedicated veterinarian, Dr. Aniket, from Indroda Park, demonstrated remarkable courage and commitment to animal welfare after being bitten by a lioness he was treating. The incident occurred after the lioness, named Swati, suffered complications following the stillbirth of her two cubs.

Tragedy struck at Indroda Park last Saturday, May 10th, when Swati, a young lioness, went into labor and delivered two stillborn cubs. Park officials attributed the deaths to the lioness’s young age, suggesting the cubs may not have fully developed in the womb.

Following the difficult birth, Swati experienced excessive bleeding, prompting the Indroda Park veterinary team, including Dr. Aniket, to rush her to Himmatnagar Veterinary Hospital for urgent medical attention.

During the course of treatment, for which Swati had been sedated, the lioness unexpectedly began to regain consciousness. Initial movements, such as leg twitching, alerted the attending doctors. As they prepared to administer an additional dose of anesthesia, Swati abruptly stood up. In the process of trying to administer the injection, Dr. Aniket’s hand was bitten by the recovering lioness.

Displaying considerable bravery, Dr. Aniket managed to free his hand from Swati’s jaws. The veterinary team then successfully brought the lioness back under control.

In a testament to his dedication, Dr. Aniket, despite his own injury, prioritized the immediate needs of the distressed lioness. He first ensured that Swati received the necessary treatment for her condition before seeking medical attention for his own bite wound at a hospital.

Sources report that Dr. Aniket’s health is now improving. The incident highlights the potential dangers faced by veterinary professionals working with wild animals, even in controlled environments, and underscores Dr. Aniket’s commitment to his patient.DeshGujarat
