Residents of Rajkot’s Vardhaman Nagar Oppose Sale or Rental of Homes to Non-Locals, Non-Hindus

Rajkot: Residents of one of the upscale localities in the city, namely Vardhaman Nagar, have put up bold banners outside their homes stating, “Non-Hindus and outsiders should not buy homes here; locals should not sell to them.” These banners reflect strong opposition by locals to renting or selling property to individuals from other states or different religions.

Residents claim they were forced to take this step due to alleged harassment and disturbances caused by non-Hindu tenants. The area is predominantly inhabited by Jain and Soni families, who have now demanded that the locality be brought under the Disturbed Areas Act to prevent further unrest.

One local told the media, “The banners have been put up to inform brokers, non-Hindus, and non-locals that the society association has decided not to give residential or commercial space to these people. We have specifically written that brokers should take note of this.”

The local further pointed out Bengali workers, who are often given homes on rent in the area, and claimed that many of them use harmful chemicals in their work, posing a risk to the residential environment.

Residents also raised concerns about social and cultural disturbances caused by non-Hindu neighbors. They cited issues such as women feeling unsafe stepping out and children being unable to play freely. Many Jain families in the locality are strictly vegetarian, avoiding even garlic and onions. The presence of non-vegetarian food and its preparation nearby has reportedly created discomfort for them.

Another resident stated that a formal demand to bring the locality under the Disturbed Areas Act has been submitted to the local MLA and the district collector. DeshGujarat
