NEET PG 2025 Postponed: NBEMS Exam now in Single Shift as Per SC Orders; Fresh Dates Soon

New Delhi: In a significant development affecting thousands of medical graduates across the country, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has officially postponed the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate courses (NEET PG) 2025, which was earlier scheduled to be held on June 15, 2025.

The decision comes in compliance with a recent directive issued by the Supreme Court of India, mandating that the NEET PG examination must be conducted in a single shift to ensure uniformity, fairness, and transparency in the evaluation process.

Why NEET PG 2025 Was Postponed?

The Supreme Court’s intervention followed multiple petitions from candidates who had raised concerns over the existing two-shift examination format. They argued that this system created discrepancies in the difficulty level of the question papers across shifts, leading to potential unfairness despite the use of score normalization.

The apex court responded to the plea by emphasizing the importance of “just, fair, reasonable, and equitable” treatment of all candidates. As a result, the Court directed the NBEMS to hold the NEET PG 2025 in a single uniform shift for all aspirants nationwide.

Official NBEMS Notification and Revised Schedule

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, NBEMS issued an official notification on June 2, 2025, confirming the postponement of the NEET PG 2025 exam. The board stated that due to the shift from a two-shift to a single-shift format, it needs additional time to arrange more test centres and infrastructure to accommodate all candidates in one sitting.

Key updates from the NBEMS include:

  • Original Exam Date: June 15, 2025 (Postponed)
  • City Intimation Slip Release: June 2, 2025 (Deferred)
  • Admit Card Release: June 11, 2025 (Deferred)
  • New Exam Date: To be announced shortly
  • Mode of Exam: Computer-Based Test (CBT)
  • Language of Exam: English

Candidates are advised to regularly monitor the official NBEMS websites – natboard.edu.in and nbe.edu.in – for the latest updates and revised schedule.

Exam Pattern and Format: What to Expect in NEET PG 2025

Despite the postponement, the exam structure for NEET PG 2025 remains unchanged. As per the current scheme, the exam will be a Computer-Based Test (CBT) consisting of:

  • Total Questions: 200 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
  • Total Marks: 800
  • Sections: 5 sections of 40 questions each
  • Duration: 3 hours and 30 minutes (210 minutes)
  • Negative Marking: 1 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer

Importantly, the NEET PG exam tests knowledge from 19 MBBS subjects, grouped into:

  • Pre-clinical subjects (e.g., Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry)
  • Para-clinical subjects (e.g., Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology)
  • Clinical subjects (e.g., Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology)

Each section must be completed within its allocated time before proceeding to the next, with no option to return to previous sections.

Post-Exam Process: Counselling and Admissions

Following the results, qualified candidates will enter the centralized counselling process for admission to postgraduate medical courses such as MD, MS, and PG Diploma programs.

  • 50% All India Quota (AIQ) seats: Counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC)
  • Remaining 50% seats: Managed by respective state counselling authorities

The counselling process will proceed based on NEET PG merit rankings and candidate preferences, and includes choice filling, seat allotment, and document verification.

What Should Aspirants Do Now?

With the postponement of NEET PG 2025, candidates are urged to use this additional time to:

  • Strengthen preparation across all MBBS subjects
  • Revise key topics with a focus on high-yield areas
  • Practice mock tests under exam-like conditions
  • Stay updated with NBEMS announcements to avoid missing important dates

The postponement, while disruptive to some, is aimed at ensuring fairness and standardization for all candidates.

Final Words

The postponement of NEET PG 2025 reflects a critical judicial intervention in response to long-standing candidate concerns. The move to a single-shift examination is expected to enhance fairness and credibility in one of India’s most competitive medical entrance tests.

While aspirants await the revised schedule, the additional preparation window could serve as an opportunity to fine-tune their performance. NBEMS is expected to announce the new date soon, and candidates are advised to keep their documents ready and continue focused preparation. DeshGujarat
