In Pictures: Indian Army Assists in Rescue Operations at Air India Flight Crash Site

Ahmedabad: Around 130 Indian Army personnel have been deployed to support civil authorities in the ongoing Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations following the crash of an Air India flight near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, officials said.

According to a statement from the Indian Army, the response teams include engineering units equipped with earth movers for clearing debris, medical teams with doctors and paramedics, Quick Action Teams (QATs), fire-fighting units with extinguishers and water bowsers, and provost staff to manage the site. Additionally, a nearby military hospital has been placed on standby.

The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 people including 12 crew members, crashed shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport earlier in the afternoon.

Western Railway has also dispatched its Disaster Management Team, along with medical staff and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, to assist the Gujarat government and other rescue agencies.

The state government has deployed three teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), comprising a total of 90 personnel, from Gandhinagar to the crash site to bolster rescue efforts.

As per the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the London-bound Air India flight crashed in the Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad shortly after its takeoff at 1:38 p.m.
