Dholera: In a major infrastructure push, the Gujarat government is fast-tracking residential development in the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) to accommodate the workforce of Tata Group’s massive ₹91,000 crore semiconductor fabrication plant.

As reported by The Economic Times, roughly 1,500 serviced apartments are in the pipeline to house Tata employees, foreign professionals, and staff from partner and vendor firms. Of these, around 275 units have already been completed, with 250 currently occupied. Another 225 are nearing completion, while construction on an additional 1,000 apartments is underway. These new units are expected to be ready by early 2026.

In parallel, Tata has reportedly acquired a 10-acre plot where it intends to build a dedicated residential complex comprising 530 apartments, targeted for completion by mid-2027.

Tata’s upcoming fab in Dholera is a cornerstone of India’s broader semiconductor manufacturing mission. Once operational, the facility aims to produce about 50,000 wafers per month, including chips used in power electronics, microcontrollers, display tech, and high-performance computing. These components are vital for industries such as automotive, wireless communications, AI, and data storage.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, at the project’s foundation ceremony in March 2024, announced that the plant’s first semiconductor chip is likely to roll out by December 2026.

To cater to the housing and lifestyle needs of its growing workforce, a ‘Global Tent City’ is being developed near the plant. This zone will feature international dining options and essential amenities such as a school, hospital, fire station, desalination plant, shopping mall, and a hotel. Private developers are undertaking these projects on land allocated through government auctions.

In a bid to bring global expertise to the venture, Tata Electronics has appointed top industry veterans. Tim McIntosh, formerly with Intel, now serves as VP and head of operations at Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test (TSAT). Meanwhile, KC Ang, who previously held the position of Asia President at GlobalFoundries, leads Tata’s semiconductor manufacturing division.
