South Gujarat rain leaves NH-48 damaged in Valsad; NHAI asked to expedite repairs
June 25, 2025
Valsad: Incessant heavy rainfall over the past four days in South Gujarat has severely damaged portions of National Highway 48 in Valsad, causing large potholes at multiple locations and creating major inconvenience for commuters. In response to growing public concern, Valsad MP Dhaval Patel visited the affected stretch of the highway and directed NHAI officials to expedite the repair work while maintaining the highest quality standards to ensure safe and durable roads for the public.
Authorities have identified 11 critical spots, including an 8-foot-wide pothole on the Karambeli Bridge and major damage near the Sugar Factory Bridge, where road conditions are described as extremely poor. The contractor has been directed to complete the repair work within a week.
For now, temporary pothole filling is being carried out, while long-term RCC resurfacing will be undertaken soon to provide a lasting solution.
After visiting the site, MP Dhaval Patel told the media, “If necessary, we and the MLAs will join the repair work ourselves with shovels. One side of the highway is in good condition, but the other clearly shows signs of negligence.”
Patel also issued a stern warning, stating that agencies found negligent in executing the repair work may face blacklisting. He emphasized that constant monitoring will be ensured by the administration until the work is completed.
An NHAI official stated that the base of the road is very old, dating back to when it was a four-lane road. While one side is smooth with no potholes, the damaged stretch needs urgent attention. The NHAI will complete patchwork within a week and is prepared to resurface up to 100 meters, if needed.
Similarly, NH-48 in the Kamrej area of Surat was also waterlogged after the city witnessed over 16 inches of rain in just one and a half days.
