Surat reels under knee-deep waterlogging for third day despite ease in rainfall
June 25, 2025
Surat: While rainfall intensity reduced by Tuesday afternoon, the ordeal for thousands of residents in Surat continues as large parts of the city remain submerged. Residential areas, commercial zones, and key roads are waterlogged, paralyzing routine life.
Floodwaters continue to cripple daily life in the Parvat Patiya area for the third consecutive day, with thousands of residents in housing societies like Vrajbhoomi, Rishi Vihar, Satyam Shivam Heights, Nandanvan, Vrindavan, and Madhavbagh facing relentless hardship. Waterlogged streets and knee-deep water levels have left the locality paralyzed, especially as the Mithi Creek in Limbayat is still overflowing.
South Gujarat witnessed relentless rain for the second day, flooding both urban neighborhoods and industrial belts. In Surat alone, 13.6 inches of rain was recorded in just 24 hours till 6 am on Tuesday, followed by another 2.6 inches (66 mm) in the next four hours. Despite a lull in the afternoon, water stagnation persists even now.
Residents complain that water levels on a 1.5-kilometre stretch in Parvat Patiya remain knee-deep, severely affecting vehicular and pedestrian movement. Many are being forced to rely on pedal rickshaws to exit the area, reportedly paying up to ₹100 per trip. Several vehicles have stalled mid-route due to waterlogging.
Locals have expressed anger and disappointment over the administration’s response. Despite a visit by the Municipal Commissioner to the affected area, the situation remains unchanged. Citizens allege a total failure of the drainage system and inadequate disaster response from the authorities.
Other regions that are also affected include Varachha Road, Adajan, Sarthana, Godadara, Bhatar, Saniya Hemad, and Limbayat. As the monsoon has just begun, the inability of floodwaters from the creek to recede even after two days raises serious concerns about the city’s flood preparedness and drainage infrastructure.
