Gujarat govt mulls bringing 5 towns into AMC limits: Report

Gandhinagar: Ahmedabad is poised to become significantly larger, with the state government considering a proposal to merge five adjoining municipalities into the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). According to a news report, the plan includes incorporating Sanand, Mehemdabad, Bareja, Kalol, and Dahegam within AMC’s jurisdiction.

The proposed timing is notable, coming ahead of the municipal corporation elections scheduled for January 2026. If approved, the merger would substantially expand Ahmedabad’s territorial boundaries and population base.

As per the TOI report, bringing these areas under a single administrative umbrella could help streamline service delivery and accelerate infrastructure development in these five towns, which have seen significant growth. However, the plan also comes with considerable challenges. The AMC would need to invest heavily to bring the newly merged areas up to urban standards, including improvements to water supply, sewerage systems, road networks, and public transport. “The financial implications will be significant,” officials told the newspaper.

On the other hand, local residents might also need to pay higher civic taxes once they come under AMC’s jurisdiction. As for formalities, the merger would require redrawing ward boundaries, expanding AMC’s workforce, and setting up new offices to manage services effectively in the newly added regions. DesjGujarat
