New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra triggered a fresh political storm after she remarked that Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s “head should be chopped off” for failing to stop infiltration of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants into India.

Speaking to reporters in Nadia district, the Krishnanagar MP said border security falls squarely under the Home Ministry and accused Shah of shifting blame onto the TMC government — an issue gaining prominence ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.

A video of her comments, made in Bengali, quickly went viral, drawing sharp condemnation from the BJP and prompting a complaint at Krishnanagar’s Kotwali police station. Moitra criticised Shah’s repeated claims about infiltrators, pointing out that border forces operate under his ministry.

The TMC leader went on to say, “If India’s borders are left unguarded and thousands enter daily to grab our land and harass our women, then Amit Shah’s head should be cut off and placed on the table.” Moitra also blamed the Modi government for strained ties with Bangladesh, claiming, “A friendly relationship has been ruined in the past several years because of you.”

Her remarks were met with fierce backlash. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla labelled them an “ISIS-style ‘sar tan se juda’ comment” and accused Moitra of reflecting a “Talibani mindset.” The BJP said her statement showed the TMC’s culture of hatred, while calling on the party to clarify if it endorsed her views.
