Gujarat HC lawyers end strike, to resume court work from Monday

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat High Court Advocates Association (GHCAA) today announced that it will return to work from Monday, ending the five-day strike that began on Tuesday. The GHCAA had decided to abstain from work following its extraordinary general body meeting, in protest against the Supreme Court collegium’s recommendation to transfer Justice Sandeep Bhatt to Madhya Pradesh.

The strike concluded after a six-member delegation from the association met the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in Delhi. The delegation’s representation is under consideration, and a response from the Supreme Court is awaited before any further decision. Meanwhile, lawyers will resume regular court proceedings from Monday.

Delegation meets CJI in Delhi

A six-member delegation, led by Association President Brijesh Trivedi and General Secretary Hardik Brahmbhatt, met the CJI in Delhi. The CJI listened to their concerns patiently and assured that the representation would receive due consideration. The delegation requested reconsideration of Justice Bhatt’s transfer.

GHCAA President Brijesh Trivedi said the delegation was “heard very patiently” and was asked to submit additional copies of their representation. “The delegation was assured that the Chief Justice of India and the collegium members would review their detailed submission,” he added.

The delegation noted that, while they are unaware of the collegium’s reasons for the transfer, Justice Bhatt is known for his dedication and integrity. Over the past four years, he has handled and disposed of nearly 19,000 cases. His directives to install CCTV in the Gujarat High Court registry and his observations regarding missing files were aimed at ensuring judicial transparency. The delegation warned that his transfer could tarnish the image of the judiciary. DeshGujarat
