Ahmedabad: In a tragic incident, a 50-year-old city police inspector has succumbed to suspected rabies, reportedly contracted after being scratched by his own pet street dog.

According to initial reports, Police Inspector Vanraj Manjariya, posted at the Police Control Room, was a dog lover and used to keep street dogs at his residence. One of these pet street dogs scratched him around a month ago at his farmhouse. Last week, after symptoms of rabies began to appear, he was admitted to KD Hospital on 18th September. Despite treatment, the infection proved fatal. His condition reportedly became so severe that he had to be restrained at the hospital, media reports stated.

The hospital confirmed that symptoms, including high fever, hydrophobia, and aerophobia, are all linked to rabies. Samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune, to confirm the disease.

This tragedy underscores that even minor injuries from domestic animals can pose serious health risks if not promptly and properly treated. This is the second such death in the state from rabies due to scratches from pet dogs; a similar case was recently reported in Kheralu Taluka of Mehsana. DeshGujarat
