Massive Sinkhole Emerges on Akota–Mujmahuda Road in Vadodara

Vadodara: Even after the monsoon season has ended, incidents of road collapses have occurred in Vadodara city. Today, a massive 10-foot-wide sinkhole emerged unexpectedly on the busy Akota–Mujmahuda Road. The sinkhole contained water, suggesting a possible water or sewage leakage nearby.

The sudden collapse, despite no ongoing rainfall, created immediate chaos on the road. Upon receiving reports, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) team rushed to the site. Officials attempted to secure the area by putting up diversion signs and covering the affected portion. However, commuters faced significant difficulties due to the obstruction on this main city route.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders regarding the Corporation’s handling of city infrastructure. Rakesh Thakor, Congress president of Ward-12, visited the site and accused the authorities of negligence. He said, “Despite numerous collapses on Akota Road in the past year alone, the Corporation has not taken any action against the contractors responsible.”

Meanwhile, the Deputy Executive Engineer of VMC stated that only five sinkholes have emerged in the city this year. To resolve the issue, VMC is replacing old pipelines with GRP pipelines. “We are rehabilitating a total of 2.6 km of pipelines in Mujmahuda. The first phase of the work has already commenced, and a 220-meter stretch is nearing completion. We are carrying out this work to permanently resolve the issue,” he added. DeshGujarat
