Sakkarbaug Zoo in Junagadh welcomes Sarus Cranes

Junagadh: The majestic Sarus crane, the tallest flying bird in the world, is now on display for visitors at Sakkarbaug Zoo in Junagadh.

Native to India and Southeast Asia, the Sarus crane, also known as Grus antigone, can reach heights of 5 to 6 feet. These birds inhabit wetlands, ponds, marshes, grasslands, and agricultural fields, feeding on insects, small animals, and plant matter. Known for their long necks and striking white and black plumage, they possess a wingspan that allows them to soar to great heights. Adults weigh between 8 to 10 kg and typically live up to 20 years. After mating, the female lays 3 to 4 eggs, which are carefully tended by both parents.

A rare trait among birds, Sarus cranes form lifelong bonds between a male and female, with a single male mating with the same female throughout its life. Recognized for their monogamous nature, they are considered a symbol of devotion, and special arrangements have been made at the zoo to ensure their care and comfort.

Sarus cranes are gradually becoming rare, prompting conservation efforts. Sakkarbaug Zoo currently houses two pairs (four birds) in a carefully maintained environment suitable for their habitat. A team of expert veterinary doctors continuously monitors their health and well-being to ensure these elegant birds thrive. The zoo functions not only as a wildlife collection center but also as a conservation hub, aiming to increase the Sarus population and preserve this beautiful species for future generations.
