Eyewear Disruptor Unveils Smart Glasses Initiative, Touting PIN-Free UPI Payments
October 28, 2025
Ahmedabad: The next major technological leap in the eyewear industry is on the horizon, with Lenskart actively developing and preparing to launch its Smart Eyewear line. The upcoming product integrates advanced technology, such as camera capabilities and intelligent software, with a strong focus on indigenous innovation tailored specifically for the Indian market.
India-Centric Innovation and Rapid Development
Lenskart’s smart glasses initiative builds on India’s strengths in world-class manufacturing and software development, areas in which the company has operated successfully for over a decade. A key aspect of this strategy is the establishment of an India-centric technology team dedicated to chip and software design.
This approach enables the company to collect consumer usage data from the smart glasses and roll out newer versions rapidly, ensuring the products are optimized for Indian consumers. The goal, according to company officials, is to maintain a fast-paced, iterative development model based entirely in India.
The hardware and software development work, including the design of specialized components, is being carried out domestically, with Lenskart embedding its full technology team within India.
In an example of an India-centric concept, the smart glasses will also cater to the Indian love for food. They will reportedly be capable of calculating the calories of the dish a user is about to eat. For example, when a user picks up a plate of dhokla, the glasses will display the calorie count of the popular Gujarati snack—combining convenience with health-conscious technology.
Pioneering UPI Payments Through Smart Glasses
Among the most groundbreaking features of Lenskart’s Smart Eyewear is the integration of UPI payment functionality. This technology leverages a camera embedded within the glasses.
The smart glasses enable users to complete UPI payments simply by scanning the required target using the camera. Notably, this process allows payments without the need for a PIN. A demonstration showcased a successful transaction of ₹100 using this method.
This focus on UPI stems directly from the company’s India-centric development plan, as UPI is considered “very unique to India” and is not commonly used in most other parts of the world.
The launch of the upcoming B Camera Smartglasses product line is imminent in the next few months. Lenskart expects this innovation, along with its ongoing collaborations—such as the 30-year partnership for Harry Potter-themed collections—to further strengthen its leadership in the eyewear market.
The announcements were made by Lenskart Co-founder and CEO Peyush Bansal, who also serves as Chairman and Managing Director, during a press conference in Ahmedabad ahead of the company’s Initial Public Offering (IPO) opening on October 31, 2025.
