Rajkot Ring Road-2 expansion picks up pace; RUDA invites tender for Phase-5 construction
November 07, 2025
Rajkot: The expansion of Ring Road-2 (RR-2) in Rajkot has gained momentum as the Rajkot Urban Development Authority (RUDA) has officially invited tenders for the construction of Phase-5, covering the stretch from Morbi Road to Ahmedabad Road. This phase marks a critical step in upgrading the city’s key traffic artery and improving connectivity across the Saurashtra region.
The Phase-5 project will feature a four-lane road over 9.4 km and a two-lane road over 1.7 km, linking Ahmedabad National Highway (NH-27) to Morbi State Highway (SH-24). The estimated cost of the project is ₹98.43 crore, with a completion period of 24 months.
Phase-5, which was approved by RUDA in September this year, is a critical section whose centerpiece will be the Katariya Chowkdi on Kalavad Road—a major intersection being upgraded into a three-layered junction.
The Rajkot civic authorities have initiated the redevelopment of Katariya Chowkdi, where RR-2 intersects with SH-23, into a three-tiered junction. Plans include a 459-metre extradosed underpass equipped with amenities such as badminton and basketball courts, food courts, an open-air gym, and an amphitheatre. Above this, an iconic cable-stayed bridge is also planned at an estimated cost of ₹167.24 crore, designed to serve around two lakh commuters daily.
Overview of Phases 1–6
-
The first phase of RR-2, an 8.96 km two-lane stretch between Jamnagar Road (SH-6) and Kalavad Road (SH-23) featuring three major bridges, was opened to the public in 2016.
-
The second phase, an 11.2 km two-lane stretch connecting Kalavad Road (SH-23) to Gondal Road (NH-27) with three major bridges, was completed and inaugurated in 2020.
-
The third phase, a 10.6 km two-lane stretch between Gondal Road (NH-27) and Bhavnagar Road (SH-25), including five major bridges, was opened in 2021.
-
The fourth phase, covering 10.3 km from Bhavnagar Road (SH-25) to Ahmedabad Road (NH-27) with two major bridges, was completed in 2023.
-
The fifth phase, the westernmost section between Ahmedabad Road (NH-27) and Morbi Road (SH-24), is set to begin construction, featuring 9.4 km of four-lane road and 1.7 km of two-lane road.
-
The sixth and final phase, stretching 8 km from Morbi Road (SH-24) to Jamnagar Road (SH-6) downstream of Aji-2 Dam, will eventually form part of the future Ring Road-3 project. Construction of this phase will commence once the required river bridge is approved and built.
Officials also noted that proposals for three Railway Overbridges (ROBs) along RR-2 are currently under consideration.
Future Plans for the Entire RR-2
The broader RR-2 project, originally conceived as a two-lane ring road over a decade ago, is being upgraded in phases to four and six lanes. The ongoing work on Phases 1–4 will continue simultaneously with the construction of Phase-5, which will already be a four-lane road.
The road is designed to act as a bypass for heavy vehicles, reducing traffic congestion within the city and improving connectivity to major highways across Western Gujarat.
With Phase-5 now moving forward, Rajkot is one step closer to realizing a modern, sustainable, and efficient ring road network, while plans for Phase-6 and the future Ring Road-3 are already underway. DeshGujarat
