Surat’s Suvali Beach to get ₹1.2 crore plant to turn seawater into drinking water
November 10, 2025
Surat: At one time, there was only a single unpaved road leading to the beautiful Suvali Beach in Hazira. Moreover, since the road was deserted, tourists who wished to visit the beach with their families often felt hesitant. However, over the past three years, Suvali Beach has undergone a major infrastructure upgrade.
A 10-meter-wide double-lane asphalt road, streetlights, and essential facilities, including toilets for tourists, have been developed. With these improvements, residents of Surat have gained a new destination in Suvali Beach, where they can enjoy their leisure time freely.
In the latest addition, Choryasi MLA Sandeep Desai has initiated the process to set up a distillation plant using funds from a notified grant, ensuring that tourists visiting Suvali Beach have access to safe drinking water. The plant, being set up at an estimated cost of ₹1.2 crore, is designed to convert seawater into potable water and is expected to become operational soon.
How the Distillation Process Works
The distillation process involves boiling seawater to produce steam. This steam is then collected, cooled, and condensed back into liquid form. During this process, impurities such as salts, heavy metals, and microorganisms remain in the boiling vessel, resulting in pure, drinkable distilled water. This is one of the most effective methods to remove pollutants and make seawater potable.
Notably, after being elected as the MLA of Choryasi, Sandeep Desai launched the Suvali Beach Festival, which has been held for the past two years and has received an overwhelming response. In the first year, about 1.5 lakh tourists attended the festival, while in the second year, the number rose to 2.5 lakh. Given this enthusiastic public response, preparations are already underway for the third Suvali Beach Festival, for which the state government has sanctioned a ₹50 lakh grant. DeshGujarat
