Porbandar: In an inspiring act of devotion, an elderly beggar in Porbandar has donated ₹51,000, an amount he patiently collected over years by begging ₹1 at a time, to the Akhand Ramdhun Temple.
The donor, Nanjibhai Jadavjibhai Chavda, also known as Nanjibhai Mistry, is around 80 years old and lives alone in a dilapidated room near Sharda Mandir on the road to Thakkar Plot near Limda Chowk. Once a mason by profession, he fell into poverty and isolation after the death of his wife and children. Since then, he has been surviving on alms.
According to temple trustee Bharatbhai Rughani, Nanjibhai has been sitting outside the Kedareshwar Temple for the past several years, begging for a living and depositing small savings in his bank account. Local residents and devotees would often provide him food, while he continued to save whatever little he received from begging.
When his total savings reached ₹51,000, Nanjibhai withdrew the amount and donated it to the Ramdhun Temple. He said he has unwavering faith in Lord Ram and attends the daily aarti without fail.
Speaking about his decision, Nanjibhai reportedly said he has no family members left and wondered what he would do with the money. Instead of letting the funds go unused after his death, he chose to donate them to the temple.
People familiar with him shared that Nanjibhai has always been generous he would often donate small amounts from his alms to the nearby Hanuman Temple, give money to other beggars, and even distribute religious books.
His act of donating what he called his “death capital” to the temple has been widely appreciated by devotees and the local community. DeshGujarat
