Ahmedabad police bust fake call centre ‘scamming’ NRIs; 24 nabbed

Ahmedabad: The Navrangpura police have uncovered a fake call centre operating from the 12th floor of Sakar-9 on Ashram Road, detaining 24 individuals in a raid conducted on Monday night.

The racket allegedly targeted Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) by offering “special schemes” on medicines, taking advance payments in US dollars, and then either failing to deliver the products or sending low-quality substitutes. Refunds were never provided. Investigators believe the operation had been active for the past eight months.

Acting on specific information, Navrangpura police raided the premises, where staff members were found calling individuals in the US. They collected details about medical problems and convinced victims to purchase a “$600 medicine package.” The call centre was allegedly run by one Abhishek Pathak, who had hired a team of 24 young men and women.

All 24 accused, including women residing in PG accommodation, have been detained, and the police have seized computers, servers, and other equipment. Investigators are now tracing the money flow, data sources, and possible international links.

The gang reportedly obtained databases containing contact information of Indians living overseas. During the raid, police found printed scripts with religious greetings and persuasive claims crafted to gain trust.

It is learnt that the racket lured NRIs with promises of curing diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, and thyroid issues within six months. The scripts also offered solutions for weight loss, baldness, skin diseases, pregnancy issues, and children’s health problems. DeshGujarat
