195 Pakistani Hindus Given Indian Citizenship Certificates at Ahmedabad Camp

Ahmedabad: A total of 195 Hindu expatriates from neighboring countries were awarded Indian citizenship certificates at a special camp held in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Harshabhai Sanghvi and Minister of State for Urban Development Darshanaben Vaghela in the city.

Out of the total, 122 certificates were granted under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), while 73 were registered directly at the collector’s office.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Deputy Chief Minister Sanghvi said, “Today is a moment of great joy for 195 people receiving citizenship at once, a scene rarely seen in other states. Those who came to India as refugees after years of hardship are now active participants in the nation’s development.” He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the CAA, emphasizing its significance in ensuring safety, rights, and dignity for refugees from minority communities in Pakistan.

Sanghvi also praised the Ahmedabad district administration for its consistent efforts since 2017 in issuing citizenship certificates efficiently and commended social leaders and organizations who assisted the beneficiaries.

Several beneficiaries shared their experiences. Dr. Mahesh Kumar Purohit, a gynecologist who migrated from Pakistan in 1956, described the relief and joy of obtaining citizenship, enabling him to finally get a passport and meet his daughter abroad. Pooja Abhimanyu, an engineer, expressed that the citizenship certificate represents not just a document but a new beginning for families like hers.

Minister Darshanaben Vaghela congratulated all recipients and said, “India embodies the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. Today, we welcome all new citizens into the Indian family. The Central Government understands the challenges faced by refugee families and works to provide solutions.” She also highlighted state government schemes aimed at improving the living standards of communities.

Naroda MLA Dr. Payalben Kukrani urged new citizens to contribute to national unity and progress. Census Director Sujal Mayatra provided an overview of the Citizenship Act, 1955, and the processes followed under the law for issuing certificates. DeshGujarat
