Senior-most Gujarat IPS officer Shamsher Singh repatriated from Centre
January 02, 2026
New Delhi: In a major development concerning the Gujarat police administration, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the premature repatriation of Dr. Shamsher Singh, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Gujarat cadre (1991 batch), from his current posting in the Border Security Force.
According to an Office Memorandum issued by the Police-I Division of the Ministry on January 2, 2026, Shamsher Singh, who was serving as Additional Director General in the BSF, has been repatriated to his parent Gujarat cadre with immediate effect. The approval has been granted by the competent authority. The Ministry has directed the BSF to intimate the date on which the officer is formally relieved of his duties.
The move is expected to have implications for the state’s police leadership structure. Singh is senior to the current in-charge Director General of Police (DGP) of Gujarat, Dr. K. Laxmi Narayan Rao, popularly known as K. L. N. Rao, by one year. With Singh’s retirement due in March 2026, his return has fuelled speculation that he could be entrusted with a key responsibility in the state police during the remaining tenure of his service.
Before proceeding on central deputation, Singh had held several important positions in Gujarat, including Police Commissioner of Vadodara and Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Gujarat. Known for his disciplined approach and administrative experience, he is expected to formally assume charge in the Gujarat Police shortly after being relieved from the BSF. DeshGujarat
