Gujarat to propose widening of Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway to eight lanes

New Delhi: The Gujarat government is set to request the union government to expand the Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway (NE-1) from the existing four/six lanes to eight lanes corridor in a bid to strengthen road infrastructure and improve commuter safety.
The proposal is expected to be placed before the two-day Transport Development Council (TDC) meeting beginning in New Delhi, chaired by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. State transport ministers, principal secretaries, and RTO commissioners from across the states, including Gujarat, are participating in the meeting.
Opened in 2004 under the Golden Quadrilateral project, the 93-km expressway has emerged as a crucial corridor connecting Ahmedabad, Nadiad, Anand, and Vadodara. Over the last two decades, rapid urbanisation, industrial growth, population rise, and increased logistics activity have led to a sharp rise in vehicular movement, now estimated at around 51,000 vehicles daily, resulting in heavy traffic congestion and frequent accidents. With its connectivity to the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway near Vadodara, traffic pressure on the route is expected to increase further.
According to officials, the proposed widening is technically feasible as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) already holds adequate right of way along the corridor, minimising the need for land acquisition. As per reports, NHAI already possesses 50 metres of land on both sides of the expressway. The proposal notes that the expansion would ease congestion, enhance road safety and ensure smoother movement between Ahmedabad, Vadodara and onward towards Mumbai.
The TDC meeting is also expected to deliberate on broader national issues, including road safety strategies, highway upgradation, promotion of electric vehicles, use of alternative fuels, simplification of tax structures, national permits, technology-driven traffic management and smart highway development. It’s required for traffic. Because Ahmedabad to vadodara vehicle traffic is to much.
Proposing for enhancement of existing facility is good but available facility of Dahod to Navasari express way is delayed on flimsy grounds I.e. electric line shifting.Who is responsible in electric department ? Will the authorities take action / punish them
Stupid are the people who don’t know what the issue is! From Ahmedabad side the approach to NE-1 is mostly a big hindrance that increases the actual time to cut the journey from Ahmedabad to Vadodara and vice-versa. If the access roads are so poor that to cross the CTM / Jashodanagar takes you approx. the same time it takes to reach Vadodara from Ahmedabad toll, then you come to know that the news is made by fools. We have seen wonderful clovers and circle / crossing exists to approach moderns highways around the world but the India’s Mega City Ahmedabad feels shame to tell that it doesn’t have one even it being the oldest of all express highways.
