NRI Tower murder-suicide: FIR rule out accidental firing; dead husband booked for wife’s murder

Ahmedabad: Days after the deaths of a newlywed couple in Bodakdev were initially treated as accidental firing, a fresh FIR filed at Vastrapur Police Station today states that the husband allegedly intentionally shot his wife from behind before later killing himself.

According to the complaint filed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Jayesh D. Brahmabhatt, the incident occurred between 10:30 pm on January 21 and 12:12 am on January 22 at a flat in NRI Tower near Parijat Bungalow.

Police said that during the investigation of the accidental death report registered at Vastrapur police station, forensic and ballistic findings suggested the revolver could not have discharged accidentally. “The trigger requires a specific amount of force to be pressed, making accidental firing unlikely,” the FIR noted. The FIR states that Yashkumarsinhji Gohil (35) fired a round from his licensed revolver at the back of his wife Rajeshwariba’s head, killing her on the spot.

After the shooting, Gohil reportedly called the 108 emergency ambulance service. However, ambulance staff declared Rajeshwariba dead. Police said Gohil later died by suicide after shooting himself in the head with the same revolver.

Both bodies were sent for post-mortem at Asarwa Civil Hospital, where doctors confirmed that the cause of death in both cases was shock and haemorrhage due to firearm-related head injuries. Police also recovered the licensed revolver, registered in Bhavnagar district, and found that only two rounds were loaded, both of which were used during the incident.

A case has been registered under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 30 of the Arms Act. Further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances and motive behind the shooting. DeshGujarat
