January 28, 2026
Kutch: On the occasion of India’s 77th Republic Day, a display of patriotism and indigenous strength was witnessed at Dhordo in the Rann of Kutch, where the world’s largest national flag made of Khadi was unfurled.
The tricolour was displayed across the white salt desert in a special event organised by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India. Illuminated against the vast salt landscape, the Khadi flag measured 225 feet in length and 150 feet in width, weighed approximately 1,400 kilograms, and was crafted using nearly 4,500 metres of hand-spun and hand-woven Khadi fabric. The tricolour features a striking 30-foot-diameter Ashoka Chakra, making it a remarkable artistic achievement. Around 70 Khadi artisans worked continuously for 49 days, contributing nearly 3,500 labour hours to complete the historic creation.
During the ceremony, KVIC Chairman Manoj Kumar honoured Rajkumari, wife of the late Sergeant Muralidhar, paying tribute to the martyr’s supreme sacrifice for the nation. The event witnessed the presence of Indian Army personnel, KVIC officials, and thousands of workers who gathered to salute the record-breaking national flag.
The occasion carried added historical significance as January 26, 2026, marked the 25th anniversary of the devastating Bhuj earthquake. The platform was used to remember those who lost their lives and to highlight the region’s journey of reconstruction, resilience, and development over the past two and a half decades.
Officials stated that the unfurling of the monumental Khadi tricolour reflects the confidence, unity, and collective spirit of a New India, while reinforcing the ideals of Swadeshi, self-reliance, and national integrity. DeshGujarat
