Sanand: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit his home state of Gujarat later this month, on February 23. During the visit, he is expected to travel to Sanand, where chip giant Micron Technology is set to commence commercial production at its new $2.75-billion semiconductor manufacturing facility.
Union IT and Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had announced the start of Micron’s commercial operations at the World Economic Forum in Davos last month. Therefore, an event to mark the plant’s operational launch is likely to be presided over by the Prime Minister.
Notably, the Prime Minister had visited Gujarat last month for three days, beginning at Somnath on January 10, where he took part in the Somnath Swabhiman Parv held to commemorate 1,000 years since Mahmud of Ghazni’s 1026 invasion of the Somnath Temple and the 75th anniversary of the temple’s post-Independence restoration.
He later inaugurated the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference for the Saurashtra–Kutch region in Rajkot, which was attended by industry leaders such as Mukesh Ambani, B. K. Goenka, and Karan Adani. This was followed by his engagement in Ahmedabad, where he inaugurated the final leg of Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2.
On January 12, he also participated in the Kite Festival alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the Sabarmati Riverfront, followed by a bilateral meeting between the two leaders.
The Sanand-based plant has completed civil construction and entered the final stage of equipment calibration, marking a key milestone and one of the earliest tangible outcomes of the India Semiconductor Mission.
Spread over 93 acres, the facility will assemble, test, mark, and package DRAM and NAND memory chips for global markets. It includes nearly 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space and was built using modular construction, with pre-assembled structural units exceeding 700 tonnes, enabling record-time completion since groundbreaking in September 2023.
