Surat: A 35-year-old head constable posted at the office of the police commissioner was allegedly assaulted by four persons in Nana Varachha on Thursday night while attempting to ease a traffic jam.
The incident took place around 9:30 pm near a health centre in Nana Varachha when head constable Akshay Ahir was returning home after duty. Noticing severe congestion caused by private buses, he got out of his car and began regulating traffic. During the process, he observed a car parked carelessly beside a private bus, further blocking the road.
When Ahir asked the driver to move the vehicle, the man allegedly threatened him and questioned his authority. Ahir then produced his identity card and informed the driver that he was on official duty. Police said the driver and his associate allegedly assaulted the constable, with one of them reportedly wearing a metal object on his hand and repeatedly punching him. Two more men later emerged from the bus and joined in the attack.
As bystanders gathered at the spot, the assailants fled. Ahir was taken to PP Maniya Hospital, where doctors confirmed fractures near his nose caused by blows from a hard object.
Kapodra police have registered a case against four unidentified accused for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of duty and voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon. Police said no arrests had been made till Friday night, and efforts are ongoing to identify and nab the accused. DeshGujarat
