AMC Proposes Innovative Vertical Wind Power System for Ahmedabad in 2026-27 Budget
February 10, 2026
Ahmedabad: In a significant move toward renewable energy and urban sustainability, the Standing Committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has proposed the installation of an innovative vertical wind power system across the city as part of the 2026–27 budget. The project, which has been allocated Rs. 5.00 crore, aims to harness wind energy in congested urban environments where traditional wind turbines are impractical.
A Breakthrough in Urban Wind Technology
The proposed vertical wind system represents a major shift from traditional horizontal-axis wind turbines. Unlike conventional turbines that require massive blades and specific wind directions, the vertical system features a rotor shaft arranged perpendicular to the ground.
Key technical advantages highlighted in the budget proposal include:
-
– Omnidirectional Capture: The system can capture wind coming from any direction without needing additional equipment to rotate the turbine toward the wind.
-
– Urban Compatibility: Due to their compact design, these turbines can be installed on house terraces, multi-storey buildings, and even in congested urban areas.
-
– Low Noise and Easy Maintenance: These systems produce significantly less noise than traditional turbines and are easier to maintain in a city setting.
Powering the City with Clean Energy
The AMC plans to deploy these vertical turbines at suitable locations and “spots” throughout Ahmedabad. The energy generated is intended to power street lights and provide clean energy for the rooftops of large buildings, further reducing the city’s carbon footprint.
Aligning with a “Futuristic” Vision
This initiative is a core part of the AMC’s broader “Sustainable and Adaptive” vision for the city. By integrating vertical wind power alongside a proposed 100 MW captive solar system and floating solar projects on city lakes, Ahmedabad aims to reach 100% renewable energy for municipal services by 2028.
The inclusion of this technology marks Ahmedabad as a pioneer in adopting specialised green infrastructure designed specifically for the challenges of a densely populated urban landscape. DeshGujarat
