AMC Approves Floating Solar Projects at Kankaria Lake, Sabarmati Riverfront and Lambha Lake
February 26, 2026
Ahmedabad: In a major push towards renewable energy adoption, the Standing Committee of the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Thursday approved floating solar power projects at key city water bodies as part of its plan to achieve net-zero energy status by 2028.
Addressing the media after the February 26 meeting, Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani described the move as a historic decision aimed at significantly reducing the civic body’s electricity expenditure and carbon footprint.
43% Renewable Energy Already in Use
Dani said the AMC currently spends approximately Rs 350 crore annually on electricity. To curb this expenditure, the corporation has already implemented renewable energy measures across its infrastructure, with 43 percent of its total energy consumption now sourced from renewables. Solar panels have been installed on all AMC buildings as part of this initiative.
Floating Solar Projects Approved
Taking the renewable push further, the committee approved proposals to generate electricity through floating solar power plants at Kankaria Lake, Sabarmati Riverfront, and Lambha Lake. The projects will be implemented through a state government agency, and tenders will be floated soon.
The initiative aims to transition the civic body towards 100 percent renewable energy usage in a phased manner. According to AMC estimates, the long-term savings from these measures could amount to nearly Rs 3,000 crore in electricity costs.
Dani said the corporation is committed to accelerating its clean energy transition and aligning with national goals of maximizing renewable energy usage. DeshGujarat
