Row Erupts Over Viral Video of Woman Performing Pooja at Bharuch Jama Masjid
March 04, 2026
Bharuch: A video showing a group of women performing pooja at Bharuch’s historic Jama Masjid has gone viral on social media, triggering a controversy in the city. In the video, women are seen offering flowers, fruits and prasad inside the mosque premises.
The controversy intensified after claims emerged that police personnel were present at the site when the worship was being performed. Members of the Muslim community have objected to the incident and demanded action, alleging that such activities should not be permitted inside a protected religious monument.
Over the years, different groups have made varying claims about the site. Some saints and members of the Chakradhar Swami Janmabhoomi Committee claim that the location is the birthplace of Chakradhar Swami.
There have also been claims by some groups that the site was once an ancient Jain temple known as ‘Shrifal Vihar’, which was later converted into a mosque. In the past, members of the Sant Samaj had staged fasts and protests over these claims.
The Jama Masjid is currently under the jurisdiction of archaeological authorities. Some Hindu organisations have alleged that madrasa-related activities are being carried out at the site in violation of regulations.
Muslim leaders, however, have strongly opposed the worship incident and urged authorities to ensure that law and order is maintained.
Following the circulation of the video and the resulting controversy, police have been placed on alert to prevent any untoward incidents in the city. Officials said the matter may be examined by higher authorities. However, the authenticity of the viral video has not yet been officially confirmed. DeshGujarat
