ASI Razes Unauthorized Wajukhana at Bharuch Jama Masjid; Seals Rear Entrance

Bharuch: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Monday carried out the demolition of an unauthorised structure at the protected monument, Jama Masjid, in Bharuch.

Under heavy police security, an ASI team carried out an exercise to remove the wajukhana (ablution area) inside the mosque, which, as per the ASI, was built without authorisation. The authority also permanently sealed the rear entrance of the structure. ASI officials said the action was taken in accordance with prescribed rules and regulations.

Believed to have been built in the 14th century, the Jama Masjid has remained at the centre of public debate in recent years. Several Hindu organisations have claimed that the monument was originally an ancient Jain temple known as Samli Vihar. It has also been asserted that the site is the birthplace of Chakradhar Swami.

Over the past six months, several Hindu groups have reportedly submitted representations and organised protests, including hunger strikes by saints, seeking restoration of the site to what they describe as its original form. Amidst these demands, the ASI initiated an inspection of structures within the mosque’s premises while maintaining tight police security.

According to allegations raised by some Hindu organisations, the Jama Masjid has two entrances. They claim that visitors entering through the front gate are recorded by security personnel deployed by the ASI, while no such record is maintained for those using the rear gate. Following an inquiry into the matter, the ASI sealed the rear entrance on Monday. DeshGujarat
