Ahmedabad to Add 1,000 Electric AC Buses; AMTS to Get 700, BRTS 300
March 05, 2026
Ahmedabad: In a major push towards green and sustainable public transport, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC), along with its transport undertakings AMTS and BRTS, will induct 1,000 new electric AC buses in the city under the Government of India’s PM E-DRIVE Scheme.
Currently, Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL) operates around 350 buses in the city’s public transport system, of which 200 are electric buses. The civic body is already planning to introduce another 250 electric buses, with a long-term goal of converting the entire BRTS fleet into electric buses.
As part of the latest initiative, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), Government of India, through Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), conducted a joint tender process for major cities across the country under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme. Under this programme, Ahmedabad has been allocated 1,000 electric buses.
The Board of Directors of Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited, in its meeting held on March 5, 2026, approved issuing a work order to procure these buses on a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) basis for AMTS and BRTS operations.
According to the approved proposal, M/s Delbus Mobility Private Limited, in consortium with Indclan Mobility Pvt Ltd and PMI Electro Mobility Solutions Pvt Ltd, emerged as the lowest bidder (L1).
Under the contract:
-
600 nine-metre AC electric buses will be deployed for AMTS, at a price of ₹51.50 per kilometre (excluding GST).
-
400 twelve-metre AC electric buses will be supplied, of which 100 will operate under AMTS and 300 under BRTS, at ₹60.80 per kilometre (excluding GST).
As per the AMC, the project will significantly strengthen Ahmedabad’s green mobility ecosystem. The initiative will include deployment of next-generation fully air-conditioned electric buses, development of depot infrastructure and charging facilities, and expansion of clean transport services on existing as well as new routes across the city.
The move is also expected to reduce air and noise pollution while providing passengers with a cleaner and more comfortable commuting experience.
Ahmedabad already holds a prominent national position in the operation of electric buses. With the addition of 1,000 more electric buses in phases during 2026 and 2027, the city aims to further strengthen its status as a leader in green public transportation. DeshGujarat
