Surat: The Gujarat government has approved road infrastructure projects worth ₹1,185 crore to strengthen connectivity across the Surat Economic Region (SER), one of the key economic zones of South Gujarat. The projects include 24 works covering a total length of 383 kilometres and will be implemented in districts falling under the SER, Surat, Bharuch, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi, and Dang. According to the state government, these districts together contribute more than 35% to Gujarat’s total economic output.

In an official press release, the government stated that the initiative aligns with the national vision of ‘Viksit Bharat@2047’ and aims to accelerate infrastructure-led growth in South Gujarat. The Chief Minister said that under the roadmap for Viksit Gujarat@2047, the state is working towards the goal of building a developed India during the Amrit Kaal.

The road projects form part of regional economic master plans prepared to develop six major growth hubs in the state to ensure balanced and comprehensive development. The upgraded roads are expected to enhance connectivity between industrial clusters, GIDC estates, and logistics corridors, making the movement of goods and workforce smoother and more efficient.

What will the road infrastructure upgrade bring?

Logistics efficiency to improve

The upgrade will improve logistics efficiency by strengthening road connectivity between major industrial hubs and GIDC areas in Surat, Tapi, Valsad, Bharuch, and Navsari districts. This is expected to facilitate the smoother movement of goods and labour and support the growth of textile, chemical, petrochemical, and diamond industries.

Industrial expansion

The improved road network in SER districts will directly benefit the industrial sector, including fisheries, Hazira Port, sugar factories, Sumul Dairy, papad industry units, mining activities, and lignite projects.
Better connectivity to key GIDC areas such as Kadod, Kadodara, Jolwa, Mangrol, Kosamba, and Tadkeshwar is also expected to accelerate industrial expansion.

Easier transportation for agriculture

Enhanced road connectivity will speed up the transportation of agricultural produce from SER districts, enabling farmers to transport their goods to markets more efficiently and strengthening the agricultural economy.

Boost to tourism

Improved road infrastructure will make travel easier for tourists visiting religious and cultural sites in South Gujarat, including Siddhanath Mahadev, Shabridham, Pandava Gufa, Anjanikund, and the Sanjan Parsi Agiary. Better access to destinations such as Mahal Forest, Saputara, Wilson Hill, and other ecotourism sites is also expected to give a fresh push to tourism activities.

Employment opportunities

The infrastructure upgrade is expected to create new opportunities in emerging sectors such as semiconductors, green hydrogen, and logistics, along with traditional industries like diamonds, petrochemicals, chemicals, textiles, and fisheries in the Surat Economic Region. This is likely to generate significant employment opportunities for the youth. DeshGujarat
