Ahmedabad Police Order Garages to Maintain Owner, Vehicle Records to Combat Vehicle Theft

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Police Commissioner has issued a notification making it mandatory for all garages, workshops, and service stations in the city to maintain detailed records of vehicles brought for repair, service, modification, or sale, in order to prevent the use of stolen vehicles in crimes and to strengthen law and order.

The decision was taken following reports received from Deputy Commissioners of Police of Zones 1 to 7, citing an increase in theft, robbery, snatching, and other property-related crimes in Ahmedabad city.

According to the notification, rapid industrial development and the rising population in Ahmedabad have led to an increase in criminal activities, in which two-wheelers and four-wheelers are frequently used. Police said stolen vehicles are often modified, repaired, or resold through garages, and the absence of proper records makes investigations difficult and delays the detection of serious offences.

To prevent the illegal movement, modification, or sale of vehicles and to maintain public safety, all garage, workshop, and service station owners operating within the Ahmedabad Police Commissionerate area have been directed to follow mandatory procedures.

As per the order, garage owners and operators must maintain a register containing complete details of every vehicle brought to the premises. The register must include:

  • Name of garage / service station

  • Vehicle type and company name

  • Registration number

  • Engine number

  • Chassis number

  • Name, address, mobile number, and identity proof of the vehicle owner

  • Date of entry of the vehicle

  • Date of delivery of the vehicle

  • Name, address, mobile number, and identity proof of the person depositing or taking the vehicle

The notification also makes it compulsory to install CCTV cameras at the entry and exit points of the garage or workshop, and the recording must be preserved for at least 30 days. Garage owners must produce registers and documents whenever demanded by the police during inspection.

The order will remain in force for 50 days, from 08 March 2026 to 06 May 2026, across the entire jurisdiction of the Ahmedabad Police Commissionerate.

Police said that any violation of the notification will invite legal action, and officers of the rank of Unarmed Head Constable and above have been authorised to register offences under Section 223 of the Indian Penal Code, 2023, against those who fail to comply. DeshGujarat
