Surat Double Suicide: Break-ups Angle Emerges in Probe into Death of Two Students

Surat: A police investigation into the suicide of two female college students in the Dindoli area of Surat has revealed that both girls were reportedly under severe emotional stress following recent break-ups in their relationships, officials said on Monday. The development has emerged as a key angle in the preliminary probe, although police said the investigation is still in progress and final conclusions will depend on forensic and medical reports.

According to the police, the deceased female students, Roshni and Jyotsna, had ended their relationships with their respective partners within a gap of about 15 days, which may have led to mental distress. During examination of their mobile phones, investigators found chat records indicating the end of their relationships. Statements of several friends and acquaintances were also recorded to verify the sequence of events.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Nirav Gohil said that, based on the evidence collected so far, the break-ups appear to be a major factor behind the incident, but the probe is still at a preliminary stage. He said oral statements from independent witnesses, questioning of the young men with whom the girls were in relationships, and electronic evidence recovered from mobile phones are being analysed.

Police said both young men have been questioned and, according to the preliminary inquiry, there is no direct evidence of harassment, coercion, or physical or mental torture by them or by family members. Investigators stated that the break-ups reportedly occurred after personal disagreements, but the exact reasons are yet to be confirmed.

Officials also said the two girls knew each other closely, and the two young men also knew each other. Police suspect that the emotional impact of the break-ups within a short period may have affected both students, but they clarified that the final cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem, histopathology, and chemical analysis reports are received.

The mobile phones of both students have been seized and will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory. Call detail records (CDR), electronic data, and witness statements are also being collected as part of the investigation.

The incident came to light on March 6, 2026, when the bodies of two B.Com students from Dindoli were found inside a bathroom at the newly built Atmiya Sanskardham Swaminarayan Temple in the Saniya Kanade area of Surat. Injection syringes and vials of anaesthesia were recovered from the spot. It was also revealed that the girls had used the AI platform ChatGPT to search for “methods of suicide.” Further investigation is underway. DeshGujarat
