Gujarat FDCA Mandates Disclosure of Real Paneer vs Analogue in Hotels, Restaurants, Eateries

Gandhinagar: In a major move to ensure food transparency and protect consumer interests, the Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA), Gujarat State, has issued a strict mandate requiring all hotels, restaurants, and ready-to-eat food establishments to clearly disclose whether they are using real paneer or a paneer analogue.

According to an official press release dated April 4, 2026, the FDCA has observed an increasing trend of “vegetable-fat paneer alternatives” being used in place of traditional dairy paneer. To prevent consumers from being misled, the authorities have made it compulsory for food business operators to display this information prominently on their menu cards or notice boards.

Key Directives for Food Establishments:

Mandatory Labeling: Products made with vegetable fats or other dairy alternatives must be clearly labeled as “Analogue” or “Vegetable-Fat Paneer Alternative”.

Prohibition of Misleading Terms: Selling or presenting analogue products simply as “paneer” is now considered an illegal and deceptive trade practice.

Transparency: Establishments must provide complete information regarding the ingredients, quality, and nature of the food items served to ensure there is no misunderstanding among customers.

Strict Legal Enforcement

The FDCA emphasized that these orders are issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with specific regulations regarding food standards, additives, and labeling. Food Safety Officers have been instructed to conduct regular inspections, verification checks, and sampling across the state. Any establishment found violating these norms or providing false information will face strict legal action under various sections of the Act.

Consumer Awareness

The administration has also urged the public to be vigilant. Consumers are encouraged to read labels carefully before purchasing food products and to report any suspicious or misleading practices to their nearest food safety office.

This initiative aims to ensure the purity and quality of food items across Gujarat while maintaining complete transparency in the food service industry. DeshGujarat
