Rain Threat Looms Over IPL 2026 Final in Ahmedabad; IMD Issues Yellow Alert
May 31, 2026
Ahmedabad: Dark clouds are looming over several parts of the country, and similar weather conditions are likely in Ahmedabad today. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rainfall and issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms in the city on Sunday, heightening concerns among cricket fans as Gujarat Titans (GT) take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
According to the IMD’s latest forecast, valid from 8:30 am on May 31 to 8:30 am on June 1, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely at several places across Gujarat, including Ahmedabad.
The weather department has also issued a yellow alert, stating that moderate thunderstorms and lightning, accompanied by light to moderate rainfall and gusty surface winds of 50 to 60 kmph, are very likely at isolated places in Ahmedabad district.
The forecast has raised concerns among cricket fans, with more than one lakh spectators expected to attend the title clash at the world’s largest cricket stadium.
What Happens If Rain Interrupts the Match?
IPL regulations provide several contingencies to ensure every possible effort is made to produce a result. If rain interrupts play on Sunday, officials can extend the match window by up to 120 minutes beyond the scheduled playing time.
Depending on the duration of the delay, the contest may also be shortened through a reduction in overs. For the match to produce a result, both teams must have the opportunity to bat for at least five overs each.
Reserve Day in Place for IPL Final
The IPL has designated June 1 as the Reserve Day for the final. If no play is possible on May 31, or if the match begins but cannot be completed due to persistent rain, the remaining action can be shifted to the reserve day in accordance with tournament rules.
This provision significantly improves the chances of crowning the champion on the field rather than through alternative methods.
What If Rain Washes Out Both Days?
In the unlikely event that rain washes out both the scheduled match day and the reserve day, the IPL title will be awarded based on league-stage standings.
Since RCB finished at the top of the IPL 2026 points table, ahead of second-placed Gujarat Titans, the Bengaluru franchise would be declared champions if no result is possible on either day.
With the weather threatening to play spoilsport, fans of both teams will be hoping for clear skies and an uninterrupted finale as Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru battle for the IPL 2026 crown in Ahmedabad. DeshGujarat
