Experts Recommend Full Reconstruction of Subhash Bridge Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: The country’s leading bridge experts have recommended complete reconstruction of the decades-old Subhash Bridge, stating that it would be a safer and more sustainable long-term solution than building a new superstructure on the existing 53-year-old substructure, the city civic body said.

Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani said on Wednesday that experts from IIT Roorkee, IIT Gandhinagar and noted bridge engineer Mahesh Tandon have suggested that rebuilding the entire bridge would be the most appropriate option. However, a final decision will be taken after the completion of technical studies and detailed analyses.

The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) initiated an extensive technical assessment of the bridge after cement concrete spalling was detected in some of its piers during a structural evaluation. As part of the exercise, a team of leading bridge experts conducted detailed site inspections and studies to assess the bridge’s current condition, structural capacity and future viability.

Pani said the experts found that the existing substructure and piers of Subhash Bridge are approximately 53 years old. According to their assessment, constructing a new superstructure on the existing foundations could pose technical limitations and challenges in the future, particularly when considering a design life of 100 years.

The experts have unanimously concluded that completely removing the existing piers and superstructure and constructing a new bridge in their place would provide a safer, more durable and effective long-term solution.

Based on these recommendations, AMC is currently evaluating both options by comparing factors such as project cost, construction timeline, expected lifespan and other technical considerations. The Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department will also review the proposed design and undertake the necessary approval process.

Pani said the Corporation is expediting the process to ensure that Ahmedabad gets a safe and modern bridge that meets long-term requirements. The final decision on the future of Subhash Bridge is expected after the completion of the ongoing technical studies and analyses. DeshGujarat
