SVP Hospital Ahmedabad Performs Advanced Bladder Reconstruction Surgery on Cancer Patient
July 15, 2026
Ahmedabad: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Hospital in the city has performed a highly complex radical cystectomy with orthotopic neobladder reconstruction on a 55-year-old man diagnosed with urinary bladder cancer, enabling him to pass urine through his natural urinary passage and significantly improving his quality of life, a press release said.
According to the statement, the patient presented to the Department of Urology with complaints of gross hematuria (blood in the urine). Detailed investigations revealed a 4-cm tumour in the urinary bladder. Following an endoscopic biopsy and comprehensive preoperative evaluation, the patient was diagnosed with bladder cancer requiring complete removal of the urinary bladder.
A 4.5-hour complex surgical procedure was successfully performed by the urology team. During the surgery, the cancerous bladder was removed and replaced with an orthotopic neobladder constructed from a segment of the patient’s small intestine. The newly created bladder was then connected to the patient’s natural urinary passage, allowing him to pass urine in a near-normal manner without the need for an external urine collection bag. The patient has recovered well after surgery and is under regular follow-up.
According to the hospital, following removal of the urinary bladder, there are two commonly accepted methods of urinary diversion. The first is an ileal conduit, where urine is diverted into an external collection bag attached to the abdomen. The second is an orthotopic neobladder, in which a new bladder is reconstructed using the patient’s intestine and connected to the natural urinary passage.
The orthotopic neobladder offers several functional and psychological advantages. It eliminates the need for a permanent external urine collection bag, preserves body image, improves patient confidence, and provides a better overall quality of life. However, patients undergoing neobladder reconstruction require regular long-term follow-up for surveillance of bladder cancer recurrence and monitoring of neobladder function.
The surgery demonstrates the advanced surgical expertise, multidisciplinary teamwork, and state-of-the-art facilities available in the Department of Urology at SVP Hospital. It further reinforces the hospital’s commitment to delivering world-class, patient-centered healthcare and providing advanced treatment options to patients across Gujarat, the press release added.
