AMC Interconnects 8 Ponds, Boosts Rainwater Harvesting Capacity by 50.24 Lakh Cubic Feet

Ahmedabad: In a major step towards sustainable water management and rainwater conservation, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has interconnected eight ponds in the city’s South-West Zone to maximise rainwater harvesting and prevent water wastage.

The project, undertaken under the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), aims to ensure that excess rainwater from one pond automatically flows into other interconnected ponds once the first reaches its storage capacity. The initiative is expected to improve water storage, recharge groundwater and enhance flood management during heavy rainfall.

The project has been implemented under the guidance of Ahmedabad Mayor Hitesh Barot and Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani.

The interconnected lakes include Mumatpura Lake (14.27 lakh cubic feet), Sandesh Punya Lake (4.25 lakh cubic feet), Kanaji-Okaf Lake (16.70 lakh cubic feet), Bedar Lake (5.30 lakh cubic feet), Malkani Lake (2 lakh cubic feet), Shakri Lake (6.22 lakh cubic feet), Naw Lake (1 lakh cubic feet) and Azadnagar Lake (0.50 lakh cubic feet).

According to the civic body, the project has increased Ahmedabad’s rainwater storage capacity by 50.24 lakh cubic feet in 2026. Officials said the additional storage will help improve water availability in the future while reducing the loss of rainwater during the monsoon.

AMC said the interlinking system will also contribute to maintaining and improving groundwater levels, ensure more efficient utilisation of rainwater and strengthen the city’s ability to manage excess water during periods of heavy rainfall.

Urban water management experts have welcomed the initiative, saying interconnected pond systems can significantly improve long-term water security and reduce dependence on external water sources.

The civic body noted that it has been carrying out pond rejuvenation, deepening, catchment area improvement and rainwater conservation works across Ahmedabad over the past few years. The pond interconnection project is the latest initiative aimed at strengthening the city’s sustainable water management infrastructure and ensuring water security for future generations. DeshGujarat
